Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (film) - WikipediaHi all! We have been taking advantage of summer pool nights and doing work around the house instead of watching as many movies, so I haven't had anything to write about. We got back at it the other night and watched an 80s classic, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

This is such a funny movie about con men who come together to compete against one another when it comes to conning one woman.  There's a twist at the end and lots of guessing as to who is telling the truth and who isn't.  It's a pretty tame movie as far as our requirements are concerned.  The term "make love" is used once and a woman is shown laying on a bed and starting to button her shirt, then the scene changes and nothing else is seen.  Lots of laughs for the whole family and I think we will probably be watching this one again.

Artemis Fowl

www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/v22vodart/16291824/p16...Before COVID-19 rocked our world, and when we were driving every day, we would often listen to audiobooks. We had listened to dozens upon dozens of them and it was always amazing that my son could follow the story so closely and pick up where we left off, even if it had been days.  My adult brain had 1,000 other things to think about so I couldn't follow most of them.

Artemis Fowl was a book that my husband and son had listened to and really liked. They'd been looking forward to the movie coming out for months, and based on the great reviews of the books they'd heard, I was excited about it too.

Last night was THE BIG night!  We had it planned for days: Dewey's for dinner, Artemus Fowl and some wine because my wine delivery was coming that day.  I had no idea what to expect when we were watching it, and although it was a good movie, there were a lot of discrepancies between the books and the movie.   No cussing, no sex, minor battles with some freezing action which I always love, and a tranquilizer dart being shot.  Adorable sassy fairies, leprechauns, and dwarfs. There are some goblins and a troll that are pretty ugly and may be creepy to much younger viewers.  There is also a character that can unhinge his jaw so you get a view of what that would look like.  He eats dirt as as he eats it, he opens a bum flap and farts massive wind.

SCOOB!

I have strong opinions on this movie choice. If you know me, this won't surprise you as I tend to be quite outspoken especially when it comes to sharing my opinion. I don't often sugarcoat it either, just deliver the news like ripping off a Band-Aid. Sometimes it's too hard to come up with a way to add sugar.  Anyway, here is goes....

Scoob! was a movie we watched when it first came out and be warned that it DOES NOT have Matthew Lillard in it. He literally does the best damn Shaggy voice on the freaking planet and he's not even in it! I kind of didn't even want to give it another chance when I heard Shaggy talk. Did you know they didn't even ASK him to do the voice?! Strike number two, assholes. OK, OK, OK, maybe they're not assholes, maybe they're really great people, but it was a bad decision in my book. What were they thinking?!
Strike number three was that Linda Cardellini wasn't the voice of Velma.  I just couldn't, guys.

BUT, we watched it , so it deserves a post. My son and husband liked it (except for the Shaggy bit I already mentioned).  I will say the animation is really great and I wish I had that talent. Wouldn't that be such a fun job?!  You can expect the same (possibly) spooky stuff as you did in the old cartoons and an amazing relationship between a boy and his dog.

Camp Nowhere

Camp Nowhere Movie Poster ImageHappy Wednesday!  Last night was a night where we were stumped.  Our son tried to talk us out of the movies we suggested, then I got SO excited when he suggested Ant-man and the Wasp. YES! BINGO! LET'S DO IT!  Then he says he can't remember what it's about, starts it and within 20 seconds stops it because he doesn't want to watch it. WHAT?!?!

At this point he gave up trying to change our minds, so that's when we decided on Camp Nowhere, a movie we discovered one day while browsing. It was free for us to rent and has Christopher Lloyd in it, and since he's great, we decided to try it.

Full disclosure, I had a couple of rum and Cokes and then made cookies, so I was not 100% present for this movie.  I had to ask my husband about any questionable language or content because I wasn't really paying attention for the last half of it.  It's a funny, silly movie about kids who don't want to go to the summer camps their parents want to send them to, so they get a former drama coach to invent a "camp" that appeals to all the parents.  The thing is the camp is for absolutely nothing except fun.

You can expect a bit of bullying, some potty humor, some  sexual references, and the cover of Playboy magazines.

War of the Buttons

www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/v22vodart/16112/p16112...I was reading about a movie I had never heard of but thought it sounded like one we would like: War of the Buttons.  There are two of versions of this movie, one in 1994 and one in 2012. We watched the 1994 version.

War of the Buttons is set in Ireland where two large groups of kids fight over turf by cutting off the buttons, shoelaces and underwear of their enemies to get them in trouble with their parents. Sounds ridiculous and silly right?! It's a funny movie but does have some sad parts in it, like when one of the boys takes a beating from his dad.

You can expect a naked group of boys running into "battle" in one scene that we found so funny!  There's also some name calling and mean kids, but no sex.

Guardians of the Galaxy

www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/v22vodart/10108283/p10...
We love superhero movies in our house. DC, Marvel, we aren't loyal to one, we love them both.  Last night, Guardians of the Galaxy was the Marvel movie of my husband's choosing.  We've seen this one a number of times and although it's not as funny as the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it's still a great choice for older children, at least 8 years and older (of course this depends on your family and what you're OK with).  The soundtrack is THE BEST! We have a Guardians of the Galaxy channel on Spotify, Amazon Music and Pandora and listen to it all the time.

Be prepared for some violence, explosions, death, flipping the bird and cussing (ass, dick, bullshit, bastard and shit) if you go for this one.  No sex, but there is discussion about one of the characters being a ladies man in the past.

Heavyweights

www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/v22vodart/16488/p16488...Hello! Last night was my pick for movie night and I was having trouble committing.  My original plan was Hook, but it's almost 2 1/2 hours long so we had to nix that one. We spent so much time enjoying the beautiful night swimming and didn't want to cut the fun short to watch a long movie. Next was PeeWee's Big Adventure, but I just wasn't feeling it.  While browsing through some of our Roku channels, we found Heavyweights.  I don't remember ever watching this movie before, but it was so fun!  It's about a camp for overweight kids that had a long history of fun and friendship, but it came under new ownership and their fun abruptly ended.  No worries, the good guys win. Lots of laughs and silliness.  The kids are adorable, they have great friendships, AND my son who has been anti-going-to-camp for years actually said he wants to go to camp now!

No sex, although a threat is made to kick someone in his bits so hard he won't be able to have children. No cussing that I remember.

Overall, a fun family movie and the verdict is that we'd definitely watch it again.
